Period cramps are caused by the uterus squeezing. It squeezes together to help get the blood out during a period. This causes cramps that can be uncomfortable or painful.

Use heat

A heating pad, hot water bottle, or wet towel heated up in the microwave can help. Just get it warm and put it over your shirt on your belly to help relieve the cramps.

Medicine

Pain relievers, like ibuprofen, can help. Just make sure to talk to an adult like a parent so you take the right amount. You can even take it the day before you know your period is coming.

Exercise

Exercise and physical activity can help make cramps feel better. Walk, run, play sports, or do whatever makes you feel good.

Eat healthy

Getting the right food and staying hydrated keeps cramps from getting worse.

Talk to a doctor

If nothing helps, or if your cramps are stopping you from doing your normal activities, a doctor can help. A trusted adult like a parent can help you talk to your doctor.
